that's bullshit, you learn to rely on them a bit more, but they are in no way hightened.

I don't think they are stronger. It's just that humans rely so much on sight that their other senses loose their importance. You focus so much on sight you don't have time to focus on hearing, taste, touch...
When sight is gone, that main attention hog is gone so you focus more on your other senses.

I don't think, it's a matter of your other senses becoming stronger or anything like that. I'd say, you rely more on your other senses. If you had sight, then lost it. You become more awhere of your other senses.

yes agree, you use what you have. if you can't see, you have to listen harder.

Well, I can't see, but my hearing's excellent. I think lack of sight can heighten your senses, for I have a very good sense of touch and sense of smell and I'm also what's known as a super taster, meaning I don't like a lot of fruits or vegetables, plus I'm slowly losing my sweet tooth, so anything particularly greasy or rich in chocolate, sugar, lemon, spices Etc, I just can't stomach it now, not like I used to.

Maybe it's not that loss of sight makes your other senses stronger. Maybe relying on 20/20 all the time dims the other 4, only no one notices because they're too busy looking at everything. And I don't know about my hearing but my sense of smell stinks.
Just my two cents.

Science has shown that braille readers have more nerve endings in their braille reading finger, and an increased sensitivity to 2-point discrimination when tested. So, in some ways, neuroplastic changes, i.e, brain development and nerve growth, can influence certain things if they are used more. Touch is the only sense that i'd say gets physically better with a loss of sight. Sighties can hear everything that we do, when it's pointed out to them. The only difference is that, by virtue of the fact that if we don't hear something, it might be dangerous to us, and they can see it so don't need to listen for it, they don't listen as carefully as we do. There's a mechanism in the brain which filters noise and sight, and tones out anything it sees as a distraction. For sighties, this includes general background noise. So, it's not that the senses are stronger. Rather, they are just used differently.

I had to explain it to a sighted person a while back and I’ll explain here.

Your senses isn’t necessarily heightened, but rather you concentrate on them more. This is because it’s generally your only way to survive and live. You have to concentrate on them so as to survive.

I'm not sure if losing one's sight, or any other sense for that matter, will heighten the rest. I must say that as of a year ago, my hearing has become ridiculously sensitive! It's really irritating at times. I have to wear earplugs in church, and I'm considering doing so for school, too. Also, recently, my sense of smell has been heightened, or has become more sensitive. This just started two Fridays ago. It doesn't bother me too much, but I guess I really annoy my family with it.
I lost my sight about thirteen years ago, so I don't think it has anything to do with my sensitive hearing and sense of smell.
